Stefan French Viola

Stefan French (viola) is a DIT Conservatory of Music and Drama graduate and has been playing for over 15 years. Stefan is also an award-winning film composer. His work has been recorded worldwide including by the Hollywood Studio Symphony at 20th Century Fox in Los Angeles.

Stefan French (viola) is a BMus in Composition graduate from the DIT Conservatory of Music and Drama in Dublin and he has also completed the ‘Composition for Film/TV’ online course with Berklee College of Music in Boston. Stefan’s primary instrument is the viola and he studied with David O’Doherty at the DIT Conservatory. As a viola player he has been a member of the Hibernian Orchestra, the DIT Symphony Orchestra, The Phoenix Orchestra, The National Youth Orchestra, The Dublin Youth Orchestra and was principal viola in the X-NYOI 40th Anniversary gala concert at The National Concert Hall. With these orchestras he has toured worldwide to Italy, France, Scotland, England and China. Stefan also regularly plays with other quartets and chamber ensembles and is mentored by the RTÉ Vanbrugh Quartet. Stefan studied composition with Jane O’Leary and Grainne Mulvey in the DIT which gave him the opportunity to work alongside the Concorde Ensemble (artists in residence). His work has been performed by the DIT Symphony Orchestra, The Concorde Ensemble and members of the RTE Concert Orchestra. His passion lies in composing music for the screen and he is very active as a film composer (www.stefanfrench.com), writing music for corporate videos, short films, documentaries, features, etc., with ongoing credits both here in Ireland and in the US.
